A major project that I am now working on, is in the exploitation of lipid self-assembly to induce transcutaneous vaccine delivery. Vaccine development and needle free vaccine delivery is a grand challenge problem being addressed by researchers at the Medical School and at the Uptown Campus at Tulane, and I am privileged to be part of this group. Funding for my research comes from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and the Environmental Protection Agency.

Dr. Varela’s research focuses on the development of anxiety in youth with a particular emphasis on cultural, familial, and cognitive influences in this process. Current research examines 1) individual and contextual factors that serve to maintain maladaptive post trauma responses over long periods of time, and 2) the relationship between emotion processing and anxiety development from a cross-cultural perspective. Professor Varela has a special interest in the mental health of Latino youth and a component of his research involves data collection in Latin America.

I am interested in how motivation can change one's own and others' well-being. With salespeople, I research the effect of motivation on the development of intelligence. With consumers, I look at the effect of motivation on enhancing the welfare that emerges from consumption. This research has applications to salesperson performance in the workplace and to mental and physical health of consumers (and salespeople). My theoretical background beyond marketing is in social and cognitive psychology.
